Global-Link – From Alpine Operations to Disaster Recovery

The Challenge

Maintaining reliable communications is a shared challenge across both military deployments and commercial disaster recovery operations. For NATO special forces training in austere, high-altitude environments, connectivity is critical for C2 and ISR feeds, yet LTE coverage is poor and satcom systems are often too heavy to carry. Conversely, UK-based disaster recovery teams require rapid-deploy solutions to restore internet access when primary infrastructure collapses — every minute offline has operational and financial consequences.

The Solution

Solace supplied the Global-Link, a lightweight and ruggedised communications hub, to both military and commercial clients. Its integrated features provided mission-ready assurance in two very different scenarios:

Enabled seamless continuity of service until fixed-line infrastructure was restored.

Nato Military Unit in the Alps

  • Bespoke integrated lid antenna for use open or closed.
  • Dual-SIM slots with Solace SIMs offering priority roaming across networks.
  • Satcom failover (tested with Starlink Mini) to maintain ISR video and C2.
  • Lightweight, daysack-carried unit, minimising burden in austere terrain.

UK Disaster Recovery Company

  • Global-Link units held in standby for rapid deployment.
  • When primary fibre connections went down, Global-Link instantly restored internet access via LTE roaming and we also provided Starlink access into the Global-Link for additional resilience.
  • Provided both Wi-Fi and direct LAN connectivity for operational systems.

Key Results

Critical connectivity: Military and disaster recovery operations face unreliable communications.
Portable solution: Global-Link provides lightweight, rugged, rapid-deploy connectivity.
Versatile applications: Supports ISR/C2 for military and restores internet for disaster recovery.
Reliable outcomes: Ensures uninterrupted operations across defence and civilian domains.

The Outcome

  • Military Application : uninterrupted connectivity during high-altitude deployments, reduced equipment burden, and reliable ISR/C2 feeds despite poor coverage.
  • Commercial Application (Disaster Recovery): continuity of operations during unexpected outages, preventing downtime and maintaining customer confidence.
  • Shared Benefit: one platform, adaptable across defence and civilian domains, delivering lightweight, resilient connectivity whenever and wherever it is needed.

The Global-Link has proven its ability to support both the tip of the spear and critical national infrastructure, offering a portable, assured communications backbone across domains.
